The Chaos That Spring Brought

Happy early summer to everyone. So far for us early summer can be summed up with one word: chaotic. From extreme amounts of rain to a full-blown tornado hitting our house, it's been nothing but eventful. We had so many plans for this year, from a full greenhouse to a podcast to selling produce at local stores and farmers markets, but all these aspirations have been completely derailed by the unpredictable and tumultuous weather conditions we've been experiencing.

The greenhouse was a source of great excitement for us this year. Despite a rocky start to spring with high winds damaging the freshly repaired cover, we persevered. Taking extra precautions, we secured the cover firmly in place. With everything in order, we successfully transferred all the plants to the greenhouse. Witnessing the plants thriving and growing vigorously filled us with joy, anticipating a bountiful garden for the upcoming summer. However, little did we anticipate that Mother Nature had an unexpected twist in store for us.

The tornado struck during the turbulent spring/early summer period, catching us off guard in the dead of night. While I, accustomed to storms, remained deep in slumber, Tori struggled to find rest amidst the raging tempest. At the crack of dawn, a deafening noise jolted us awake, prompting a swift descent to the basement's safety. Huddled together, the relentless storm battered against our shelter, casting ominous shadows of debris with each lightning strike. As quickly as it had arrived, the tempest departed, leaving us in eerie silence, shrouded in darkness and uncertainty. Emerging cautiously, the sight of the aftermath at daybreak was nothing short of shocking. Despite the arduous cleanup efforts captured on TikTok, our home still awaits extensive repairs in the aftermath of the calamity. Stay tuned for further updates as we navigate through the restoration process.

Now to the rain. On a farm, rain is crucial. It's a necessity for the crops to thrive. However, when it comes to planting a garden, rain can present its challenges. We've experienced frequent storms lately, leaving the garden plots in a muddy state. Despite the unfavorable conditions, we pushed forward and got our tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, and melons in the ground. The progress has been promising, and we're looking forward to completing the rest of the planting. Last week, a dedicated day saw the corn and wheat for the year all sown. Witnessing their rapid growth is always a delight. The transformation of the once barren dirt plot into one teeming with green sprouts has been remarkable. While we're running behind schedule in providing produce to the locals, we remain committed to our goal. Stay tuned for updates on our journey as we navigate the challenges and joys of expanding our homestead and potential produce venture..
